Bowen Therapy

What is Bowen Therapy?

Bowen Therapy is a unique approach to stimulating the body's natural healing ability, so it is sometimes challenging to describe to those who have not experienced it. There is no therapy like it in the world. While the work is gentle and non-invasive, the effective practice of it is very specific and precise. (The terms BowenWork, Bowen Technique, BowTech, Bowen Session, Bowen Therapy are all interchangeable and all mean the same treatment.)

Bowen Therapy involves gentle, yet powerful movements on muscle and connective tissue. These movements prompt soft tissue release, sending neurological impulses to the brain. Because the impulses travel through the internal nervous system pathways, they stimulate whole-brain responses, which address every system in the body - internal organ systems as well as musculoskeletal structure.

Pauses are inserted between sets of these movements, which allow the brain time to process and send messages to realign the body. It is thought that because the whole brain is stimulated, the original genetic pattern is re-awakened, and the more recent injury and compensation patterns are released. Respecting these pauses is an essential component of Bowen Therapy, for it allows the body sufficient time to remember and restore its own healthy, natural balance.

Wear or bring light-weight, loose-fitting clothing that I can work through. Or be prepared to be worked on in your underclothes, under sheets or blankets for modesty and comfort.

The ideal time for a Bowen Therapy session is immediately after an injury. This helps the body overcome the trauma before it begins to compensate for it. The compensations often create more problems than the initial trauma itself. Within 3 days is ideal for the quickest and most complete recovery.

Bowen Therapy is a complementary modality in the sense that it enhances and complements, but does not interfere with, traditional medical attention. Bowen Therapy's input to the nervous system is very subtle and the body responds over time. For that reason, it's best to avoid other manipulative therapies (massage, chiropractic, physiotherapy) for several days before and after a Bowen Therapy session as they may interfere with the results.

After you have filled out an intake form, we will discuss your medical situation and the treatment plan will be explained to you.

After your session, you will be given a sheet of instructions as to what to do for the few days following. A second visit is usually scheduled 7 days later to complete laying the treatment foundation. Subsequent visits are determined by your needs.

Because our goal is to rebalance your Autonomic Nervous System there is no chatting during the session. Your job is to simply relax as deeply as possible and our job is to help you. The lights are dim and you are encouraged to keep your eyes closed. The plan is for your Central Nervous System to concentrate only on the Bowen move and not to have to process anything else that may distract focus. You turn from your front to your back only once.

While you will be given full instructions after your treatment, you can also find them by clicking here.

You'll get the best results from your Bowen Therapy if you try to avoid other forms of bodywork for 4 days beforehand and heavy exercise on the day of your session. Please don't use ice or heat on the site of pain.

The procedures you did during my Bowen treatment on Tuesday were subtle and very effective. From the minute I stood after the treatment, my hips, knees, ankles and feet were aligned and relaxed like never before. It's crazy how smooth and effortless walking is again. It even improved my upper back posture. I slept like a baby that night. Fantastic. Thank you! - Cynthia

Truly an amazing experience, I had been so tensed up in pain in my lower back. During my treatment, it felt like cold water was being poured onto the back of my head and neck. I felt instant relief after my visit and would say my treatment/visits have gone from monthly to almost annually, a great experience. I had tried other avenues of treatment but none have come close to these results. I have recommended numerous friends who have all had success with this treatment. Cyndi is a very knowledgeable and caring person who fully understands her patients. - KM

I went to Brenda for a Bowen treatment. I had been having problems turning my head to the right without experiencing pain. Before she started the treatment, Brenda told me about Bowen and what she was going to do. The treatment was painless and relaxing and since that day, I can turn my head further to the right than I have been able to in years and without any pain. I highly recommend Brenda. She is friendly, kind and most importantly, knowledgeable and skilled in Bowen. Thank you, Brenda! - Heike

I had the pleasure of having a number of Bowen treatments from Cyndi. I was nervous at first but her attitude and knowledge quickly put my mind at ease. I had trouble with muscle tightness in my legs. After a few treatments, it relieved the tight muscles and I was able to go back to my regular activities. Thank you so much for the professionalism and attention to my issues. - FN

I have lived with fibromyalgia for 22 years. This summer's strange weather plus some gnarly dental work pushed me into an FM flare that I could not manage. Usually, rest, ice packs, and focused mindfulness can tame my FM beast but migraines, pain in all four quadrants, foggy-ness, insomnia, and malaise became my constant companions. When a friend suggested Bowen therapy with Brenda, I thought, "Well, why not? Any improvement will make a difference." By three days after the first treatment, 50% of the FM pain was gone. Non-FM pains were 100% gone - a hot spot in my upper back which had plagued me for 5 years had disappeared. A few days after the second treatment, more of the FM pain was draining away, and I was sleeping deeply for the first time in months. Several more treatments and I am able to walk down steps with little to no knee or hip pain, easily walk the dog, and think more clearly. After five sessions, I am still dealing with weather-related migraines and FM but with the diminished pain level (down by 90%), mindfulness exercises are working again. I don't know how or why Bowen works but it has made a huge difference in how I live now. - Toby

I had a few problems when I first saw Cyndi. My foot and hip were very stiff as well as my upper back. The treatments were super relaxing. The combination of physical therapy and the relaxing environment reduced a lot of the pain and stiffness in my body. The treatments are very quiet. By the time you are halfway through, you are pretty much meditating. I would definitely recommend this to anyone with joint/muscle pains or someone with a busy/stressful everyday life. - Jacob

Hi Brenda, just want to tell you that I haven't had any heartburn since my last treatment. I have had heartburn for at least 3 years or more and now it's gone. - Debbie

I have been to Cyndi for Bowen help for a number of different problems, chief among them was sciatica which resolved itself very well after a number of treatments. Currently, she is treating my foot while I recover from a stress fracture and the realignment of my hip. This was the first time I have had scar tissue treatment. I find the treatments very gentle, and I’ve proved their effectiveness many times. Cyndi is very friendly and helpful, and I always look for an opportunity to recommend her. - MC
